UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul stocks down at close

BIST 100 index drops 697.32 points from Monday's close, US dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was almost flat at 5.2920

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index fell by 0.76 percent to close at 90,829.57 points on Tuesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 90,980.02 points and lost 697.32 points from Monday's close of 91,526.90 points.

The BIST 100 peaked at 91,206.48 points, while its daily low was 90,469.86 points.

With a trade volume of 1.5 billion Turkish liras ($360 million), the BIST 100's total market value was around 587 billion liras ($111 billion) at close.

By market capitalization, leading listed companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.8 billion), private lender Garanti Bank ($6.34 billion), and energy firm Tupras ($5.4 billion).

National flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, and state lender Halkbank posted the highest trade volumes on Tuesday.

Compared to Tuesday's close, 21 stocks on the BIST 100 rose, 71 declined, and eight were flat.

Shares of Turkish conglomerate Ittifak Holding (ITTFH) were the top gainers on Tuesday -- up 3.48 percent -- while stocks of leasing company Is Finansal Kiralama (ISFIN) did the worst, losing 9.92 percent.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was almost flat at 5.2920 by market close, compared to Monday's close of 5.2950.

The euro/lira rate dropped at close; 6.0460 versus 6.0520 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.7250 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 6.7290 at close on Monday.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,268.00 by market close, up from $1,250.25 a day ago.

The price of Brent crude oil dropped to $50.73 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Tuesday, versus $54.10 at previous close.
