UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul up at close

BIST 100 index rises 0.12 pct; US dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate stands at 4.7420

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the midweek trading day up 0.12 percent at 94,551.86 points with a total trading volume of around 5.9 billion Turkish liras ($1.2 billion).

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 114.99-point hike from the previous close of 94,436.87 points, while it started the day at 94,296.01 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 93,719.11 points and 95,246.72 points, while 61 stocks on the index were on the rise, 34 on the decline, and five flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 604.3 billion Turkish liras ($127.1 billion) at the close, while the banking and holding sector indices gained 0.29 percent and 0.75 percent, respectively.

Among all sectors, the construction sector index saw the best performance, up 3.24 percent, while the mining sector index fell the most, down 3.99 percent.

Stocks of electronic appliances retail seller Teknosa (TKNSAE) climbed the most, up 13.25 percent, while shares of energy company Ipek Dogal Enerji (IPEKE) did the worst, falling 9.28 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, defense company Aselsan, private lender Garanti, prominent polyester producer Sasa, and the country's largest petrochemicals producer Petkim.

On Wednesday, the USD/TRY exchange was 4.7420 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT), versus 4.7500 at Tuesday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate fell slightly to 5.4910 by market close, down from 5.4970 at Tuesday's close, and one British pound traded for 6.2680 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 6.2710 at the previous close.

The BIST Gold Exchange index fell 0.17 percent at the close. In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,270.00 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Wednesday, versus $1,272.20 at previous close.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $74.91 per barrel -- hovering between $74.85 and $75.87 during the day -- while it was around $66 at the beginning of this year.
