UPDATE - Turkish benchmark stock index rises over 4% at close

BIST 100 index soars nearly 3,900 points from previous close; Turkish lira gains value against foreign currencies

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index surged 4.13% to close at 98,336.85 points on Thursday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index, which started the day at 94,477.87 points, gained 3,895.75 points from the previous close of 94,441.10 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 94,297.26 and 98,336.85 points during Thursday's trading -- 89 stocks on the index were on the rise, 9 were on the decline, and two were flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 649.2 billion Turkish liras ($115.8 billion) by market close, and the daily trading volume was 8.1 billion Turkish liras ($1.4 billion).

The top listed companies by market value were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($7.9 billion), private lender Garanti ($6.6 billion), and energy giant Tupras ($6 billion).

The highest trading volumes were posted by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, and state lender Halkbank.

Shares of energy and construction company Isiklar Enerji Yapi Holding (IEYHO) were the top gainers -- up 10.71 percent -- and conglomerate Verusa Holding (VERUS) dropped most, 9.21 percent.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was $1,285.05 by market close, down from 1,293.20 at the previous close.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $69.22 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Thursday.
