US: Alaska hit by massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake

Tsunami warning issued for parts of southeastern Alaska

WASHINGTON (AA) - A powerful earthquake hit Anchorage, Alaska Friday shaking buildings and damaging roadways.

The extent of the damage remains unclear.

The epicenter was just 12 kilometers (7 miles) north of Alaska's largest city.

The U.S. Geological Survey placed the temblor's magnitude at 7.0 after initially giving a preliminary reading of 6.6.

A tsunami warning was issued shortly after the earthquake struck, and will remain in effect until further notice. The National Tsunami Warning Center issued the warning for parts of southeastern Alaska.
