WASHINGTON (AA) - Country music icon Loretta Lynn, the singer of "Coal Miner's Daughter," has died, her family announced. She was 90.
"Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4th, in her sleep at home at her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills" in Tennessee, Lynn's family said in a statement Monday.
Lynn was best known for songs such as "Coal Miner's Daughter" and "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man)."
The country music legend was one of the most beloved American singers of her generation, according to the New York Times. She also set an example for women at a time when male artists dominated the music business.
She became a pioneering star leaving behind an impoverished childhood in Kentucky’s coal fields.
Lynn released 50 studio albums during her carrier, according to ABC News.
