WASHINGTON (AA) - US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin remains hospitalized and "is in good condition," Pentagon said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Pentagon provided an update on Austin's health after prostate cancer treatment, stating, "Secretary Austin currently remains hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is in good condition."

He was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the state of Maryland on Dec. 22 and underwent a minimally invasive surgical procedure called a prostatectomy to treat and cure prostate cancer.

He was released the following day and worked from home during the holidays but experienced "severe pain" on Jan. 1. He was then taken back to Walter Reed by ambulance, and has remained since then.

Austin is in contact with his senior staff and has full access to required secure communications capabilities and continues to monitor the Defense Department's day-to-day operations worldwide, the Pentagon said.

The statement also said that there is no specific date set for his release from the hospital at this time, and daily updates will be provided "until then".
