US initial jobless claims decrease by 16,000

225,000 claims filed last week, according to Labor Department

ANKARA (AA) - The number of Americans filing first-time unemployment claims last week fell by 16,000 to 225,000, according to Labor Department figures released Thursday.

The figure was expected to come in at 235,000.

The agency revised the previous week's number from 240,000 to 241,000.

The four-week moving average was 228,750, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average.

The US economy generated 261,000 jobs in October but the unemployment rate rose to 3.7%, from 3.5% in September.
