WASHINGTON (AA) - Washington’s new top envoy to Venezuela arrived on Saturday in the South American country in the latest diplomatic move between the two countries following a US military operation in Caracas early in January.

In a post on Telegram, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said Ambassador Laura Dogu was received in the capital.

Gil described an ongoing "work agenda" between the two sides, "aimed at setting a roadmap for work on issues of bilateral interest, as well as addressing and resolving existing differences through diplomatic dialogue and on the basis of mutual respect and International Law."

Separately, Dogu said through US social media company X that she had arrived in Venezuela, saying: “My team and I are ready to work.”

In a Jan. 3 military operation in Venezuela, the US captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and brought them to New York, where they pleaded not guilty to drug and weapons charges.

US President Donald Trump said his administration would "run" Venezuela and its oil assets during a transitional period.
