WASHINGTON (AA) – Donald Trump’s presidential victory was predicted 16 years ago by one of the country’s most beloved animated sitcoms, according to media reports.
The Washington Post said the prediction was made during a 2000 episode of The Simpsons entitled, Bart to the Future.
The newspaper asked episode writer Dan Greaney why a President Trump character was used.
Trump was "just the right comedic fit at the time", Greaney said.
"I never would have predicted this campaign," he said, and joked that he might have helped Trump "to flourish as a candidate."
The Post’s story was widely discussed on social media and followers of the sitcom from all around the world tweeted about.
"Amazing Bart Simpson predicted Trump's presidency & Back To The Future predicted the Cubs World Series win (1 yr early) & both came true," tweeted Aaron Levine from Seattle.
Another interesting feature of the episode was that the character, Lisa, became the nation’s first "straight female" president after Trump.
That plot development now has social media buzzing about whether the next president could be Hillary Clinton as the nation's first female president.
