US stock market opens lower

General Motors shares fall 2.9 percent

NEW YORK (AA) - The U.S. stock market opened with losses on Monday to begin the new week on a lower note.

The Dow Jones lost 89 points to start trading at 23,344 points, and the S&P 500 fell 5 points to 2,575 points.

The Nasdaq decreased by 2 points to begin the day at 6,699 points.

At the first bell, automaker General Motors saw its shares decrease 2.9 percent. Chipmaker firm AMD shares lost 5.6 percent.

Personal spending in the U.S. rose 1 percent in September, from the previous month, to beat market expectations, the Department of Commerce said earlier. This marked the strongest monthly gain in personal spending since 2009.

Personal income increased 0.4 percent in September, compared to the month before, also beating market expectations.
