ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks ended lower on Friday following President Donald Trump's new tariff threats.

The Dow dropped 0.63%, or 279.13 points, to close at 44,371.51.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.22%, or 45.14 points, to 20,585.53, and the S&P 500 was off 0.33%, or 20.71 points, to 6,259.75.

The VIX Index, also known as the “fear index," rose 3.49% to 16.33.

Trump's tariff threats took a bite out of the risk appetite in the market after stocks saw record highs Thursday.

Trump said on Truth Social that he will impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods beginning Aug. 1.

He said there has been no change to date, and there will be no change; all money will be due and payable starting Aug. 1, and no extensions will be granted.
