MOSCOW (AA) - US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, on Tuesday for an official visit, continuing his diplomatic tour of the South Caucasus.

According to Azerbaijan's state news agency APA, Vance's aircraft landed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

According to the news agency, both countries' national flags were on display, and an honor guard was assembled at the airport to formally welcome the senior US official.

He was greeted by a delegation led by Azerbaijan's Deputy Prime Minister Samir Sharifov.

The visit follows Vance's meetings in Armenia on Monday. The US has played a sustained mediating role between the two South Caucasian nations, facilitating a reconciliation process following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.

That conflict resulted in Azerbaijan's military victory and the restoration of its sovereignty over territories that had been under ethnic Armenian control since the 1990s.
