US will work to improve status of women, democracy: VP

Democracy depends fundamentally on empowerment of women, says Kamala Harris

WASHINGTON (AA) - The first female ever to hold the post of US vice president said on Tuesday that the status of women is the status of democracy, and the country would work to improve both.

Kamala Harris said democracy depends fundamentally on the empowerment of women, and the participation of women strengthens democracy.

"Eleanor Roosevelt, who shaped the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, once said, 'Without equality, there can be no democracy,'" said Harris in pre-taped remarks to a UN meeting. "We are committed to upholding the democratic values embedded in the Declaration."

She said the US has seen more women vote than men in every presidential election for the past 56 years.

"More women than ever before serve in the United States Congress. More women than ever before are their family’s breadwinner," said Harris, recalling that President Joe Biden nominated two women to lead combatant commands.

"And we are revitalizing our partnership with UN Women, to help empower women worldwide," she added.
