ANKARA (AA) – Iranian authorities on Monday found the wreckage of a passenger plane that crashed with 66 people onboard in central Iran a day earlier.

“The wreckage was found near Semirom city in Isfahan province,” IRNA news agency quoted Ahmad Jaafar Gohargani, the deputy governor of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, as saying.

The Aseman Airlines plane flying from Tehran to the south-western city of Yasuj went down in a mountainous area in Semirom district in Isfahan province on Sunday.

Iranian authorities had earlier called on European countries and China to provide Tehran with satellite images to help in locating the plane crash.

Iran has suffered several aviation accidents in recent years and has an aging aircraft fleet.

The Islamic Republic has been struggling to modernize its planes in face of U.S. sanctions imposed to curb its nuclear program.
