ISTANBUL (AA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday he held a detailed discussion with newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, focusing on military support, reconstruction, and diplomatic coordination.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said he congratulated Merz on his appointment and said: “We count on Germany to continue playing one of the key roles in supporting Ukraine—both in protecting our people now and in rebuilding the country after the war ends.”
“There is great potential for partnership between Ukraine and Germany, and we have already agreed to work on implementing many important things,” he said, adding that the two sides also discussed concrete steps for a stronger diplomatic push.
Zelenskyy said Merz reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, saying it is “important to hear.”
“We will work together for a dignified peace, and are coordinating a schedule of upcoming contacts,” he said.
