Slovakia's government falls after losing no-confidence vote

78 lawmakers in 150- seat parliament vote to expel government lead by Prime Minister Eduard Heger

BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Slovakia's government on Thursday fell after losing a non-confidence vote in parliament.

The coalition gernment in 150-seat Parliament fell after a call by the opposition following political cirisis.

78 lawmakers of three coalition voted to expell the three-party minority government lead by Prime Minister Eduard Heger which can lead to an early election.

At least 76 votes were needed to bring down the government.

The vote was iniciated by main opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party over soaring energy costs and inflation.

President Zuzana Caputova will have to appoint a new prime minister to form a government.

However, opposition and coalition parties have indicated they would prefer an early election.

A two-thirds parliamentary majority would be needed to go to the polls.
