Social media platform X files lawsuit against New York state for hate speech law

X has filed a lawsuit in New York Southern District Court against a law that took effect in the state in December.

The social media platform claimed in a document submitted to the court on Tuesday that the state was attempting to get involved in the content moderation process with the law, which requires social media platforms to submit reports on steps they have taken to moderate hate speech.

It argued that the law violates the constitutional right to freedom of expression and emphasized that regulating what content is allowed on social media platforms jeopardizes the creation of a productive environment for discussing which statements constitute hate speech.

X filed a lawsuit against the state of California in 2024 for a similar law, and as a result of that lawsuit, the requirement for companies to submit content moderation reports on hate speech on their platforms was repealed.
