GREECE (AA) – Nearly 20 irregular migrants on Sunday surrendered to police in Greece's northeastern Evros region after they were trapped due to the wildfires burning for 16 days, according to an Anadolu correspondent on the ground.

Syrian national migrants were hiding in a woodland in the Dadia town after they crossed into Greece, but they were not able to find food and drink due to the wildfires.

The group, including a pregnant woman and a baby, later started to wait by the highway to find help.

They were taken by police officers for identification.

A migrant among the group told Anadolu that his child is sick and his wife is pregnant.

They had been in the mountains for three days and were escaping from the war, said Abdul, who preferred to disclose only his first name.

Last month, 18 bodies, including two children, were found in the Dadia forest area of the northeastern Evros region.
