South Africa registers 2,684 new virus cases in one day

Country has highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on continent, fifth highest number globally

JOHANNESBURG (AA) - South Africa registered 2,684 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 615,701, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said late Wednesday.
“Regrettably, we report 194 more COVID-19 related deaths. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 13,502,” Mkhize announced in his daily statistics update.
The minister said 57 of the deaths occurred in KwaZulu-Natal province and 61 in Gauteng province, which includes the capital Pretoria and economic hub Johannesburg.
Four deaths were registered in the Northern Cape province, 12 in Eastern Cape province and 60 in Western Cape, a tourism province which includes the city of Cape Town.
Mkhize said they had conducted nearly 3.6 million tests, while 20,137 samples were tested Tuesday.

“Our recoveries now stand at 525,242, which translates to a recovery rate of 85%,” he said.
The Western Cape province is the most affected region with 3,823 deaths and 6,674 active cases followed by Gauteng province with 3,395 deaths and 27,702 active cases.
The Eastern Cape Province has recorded 2,828 deaths and 2,030 cases. The coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal has 2,054 deaths and 15,228 cases.
South Africa has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the continent and the fifth highest number globally, according to data from US-based Johns Hopkins University.
