South Korea drafts high tech plans to plug troop shortage, reduce casualties

Amid declining birthrate in East Asian country, new plan aims at unmanned defense system

By Riyaz ul Khaliq

ISTANBUL (AA) – South Korea is moving towards an unmanned defense system to plug a likely troop shortage caused by low birthrates and reduce personnel casualties.

The plan was discussed at the first session of South Korea’s Defense Science Technology Coordination Committee chaired by Vice Defense Minister Shin Beom-chul. The committee was formed early this year.

“The plan centers on efforts to establish unmanned defense infrastructure, develop related technologies and standards, and craft procedures for their potential development,” the Defense Ministry said.

Calling on all units of defense including the military, air force, and navy to put the plan “into action,” Shin said: “I call on all related organizations to play an active role (in implementing it),” Yonhap News Agency reported.

South Korea is recording a fall in birthrate, with the latest data showing that the country is witnessing a rise in the number of newlywed people with no children.

The data released early this week revealed almost half of the recently married couples in South Korea had no children in 2021 … amid the country's chronic low birthrate and changing social norms.
