‘Countries around world must come together, work for swift, peaceful resolution to situation in Ukraine,’ says President Moon

ANKARA (AA) - After Moscow moved to recognize Ukraine’s separatist regions as “independent states,” South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Tuesday said that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.

"Countries around the world must come together and work for a swift and peaceful resolution to the situation in Ukraine. South Korea will actively participate in these efforts as a responsible member of the international community," Yonhap News Agency quoted Moon as saying.

He instructed officials to prepare thoroughly to protect the South Korean economy from supply chain disruptions caused by the crisis.

"Our economic relationship with Ukraine is not large, but as the situation persists over a long period of time and the United States and the West impose strong sanctions on Russia, the impact on our economy will also be large," Moon added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the recognition of Luhansk and Donetsk in a speech on Monday evening that also attacked Ukraine’s government and the US and accused the West of ignoring Moscow’s core security concerns.

Later, he ordered the deployment of troops to “maintain peace” in the separatist regions.
