ISTANBUL (AA) - South Korean police detained two Taiwanese nationals for allegedly filming US military aircraft and facilities at an air show, Focus Taiwan reported Monday, citing local authorities.
The suspects, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, were placed under emergency detention Sunday by police in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, according to Yonhap News Agency.
They face charges of breaching the Protection of Military Bases and Installations Act after they were accused of photographing US military facilities at Osan Air Base, located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Seoul.
While visitors are typically allowed to take photos at air shows, the US military restricts entry for certain nationals, including Chinese and Taiwanese, due to concerns over illegal filming of military sites.
The two men reportedly gained access to the air show by blending in with South Korean attendees.
South Korean police are now considering whether to seek formal arrest warrants.
Taiwan's representative office in South Korea, the Taipei Mission in Korea, said it has provided the suspects’ families with a list of legal representatives and is coordinating with police as the investigation unfolds.
