South Sudan's president fires foreign minister
No reason given for removal of Beatrice Khamisa Wani, who has been replaced by Mayik Ayii Deng
By Benjamin Takpiny
JUBA, South Sudan (AA) – South Sudan’s foreign minister was sacked by the country’s president on Thursday.
Beatrice Khamisa Wani was removed as minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation through a decree issued by President Salva Kiir.
Kiir has replaced Wani with Mayik Ayii Deng, who previously served as minister of presidential affairs and was relieved of his duties last year.
No reasons were given for the president’s unexpected decision to fire Wani, who held the post since the coalition government took power in South Sudan in June 2020.
An official from president’s office, who spoke to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity, said the move came as a surprise to everyone.
He said no one had any inkling about the reason for Wani’s removal, but added that it might just be a routine portfolio reshuffle.
