GENEVA (AA) - Spain has ordered the expulsion of Nicaragua's ambassador in Madrid and another Nicaraguan diplomat in what the government described as a move of "strict reciprocity" following the expulsion of Spain's ambassador in Managua and Spain’s deputy head of mission in the Central American country.
The decision was taken on Sunday but made public on Monday, sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Spanish news agency EFE.
The reciprocal move came after Nicaragua's expulsions, which Spain described as "unjustified."
Despite the diplomatic escalation, Spain remains committed to maintaining positive relations with the Nicaraguan people, Spain’s Foreign Ministry reportedly said.
"The government of Spain will continue working to have the best possible relations with the brotherly people of Nicaragua," it added.
