Inigo Martinez set to ink 2-year contract after his contract with Athletic Bilbao ends, says Barca

ISTANBUL (AA) – Barcelona on Wednesday confirmed a two-year deal with Spanish defender Inigo Martinez on a free transfer.

"Being strong in the air, a great ball carrier and defensively solid will improve Barca's backline even further, which will also have a left-footed player to call on. A veteran of many battles, Inigo Martinez is also known for his leadership and competitive nature," the Spanish football club said in a statement.

Barcelona added that Martinez would sign the deal which will end on June 30, 2025, after his contract with Athletic Bilbao ends, with a buyout clause set at €400 million ($435 million).

Martinez previously played for Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao.

His spells at Real Sociedad and then Athletic Bilbao saw him play over 350 La Liga matches, including scoring 22 goals.

The 32-year-old helped Athletic Bilbao win the 2021 Spanish Super Cup.
