ISTANBUL (AA) — A wedding celebration hosted by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi for his son turned deadly Friday when a crowd crush killed at least three people in the town of Garut, Indonesian media reported.
Thousands gathered for the public event, which featured entertainment and free food distribution, according to the Jakarta Globe. The celebration marked the wedding of the governor’s eldest son.
Local authorities said the crowd became uncontrollable after Friday prayers, leading to a deadly stampede.
Among the victims was 8-year-old Vania Aprilia, who had attended the event with her mother. The other two fatalities were aged 61 and 39.
Witnesses said the venue became increasingly overcrowded as people converged on the site after prayers, overwhelming security arrangements. Although police and security personnel were deployed for crowd control, the measures proved inadequate.
Officials have not confirmed whether further action will be taken regarding safety protocols at the event.
