Strong quakes rock Myanmar’s Sagaing Region, felt in Thailand

ISTANBUL (AA) - A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar’s Sagaing Region on Friday, followed by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake 12 minutes later, according to the US Geological Survey.

Sagaing Region is located in the northwestern part of the country and has a population of over 5 million.

Both jolts had a 10.0 kilometers (6.2 miles) depth.

Central Myanmar is reportedly the hardest hit, while the tremors also affected mobile phone communications.

Images shared by local media showed that buildings and roads were damaged.

There were no confirmed reports of casualties.

The jolts were also felt in Thailand and neighboring countries.

Reports coming from Thailand said an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 was felt across the capital Bangkok, where a high-rise building under construction in the Chatuchak district collapsed, and people living in high-rise buildings had to evacuate.
