KHARTOUM (AA) - Anti-government protests erupted in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Sunday hours after authorities released 11 journalists.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that thousands protested in Omdurman, Khartoum's twin city.

“I saw thousands of people protesting in a popular market in Omdurman, chanting anti-government slogans," said one eyewitness.

“The police used tear gas to repress the protesters amid a detention campaign by security organs with the police in the streets,” said a protester.

The protests reportedly extended to other residential areas of Khartoum.

Around 11 journalists were released on Saturday night after being detained for covering months of protests in Sudan.

Sudan's president has promised in a meeting with senior editors to adopt political and economic reforms including a new constitution, changes to the public order law, and releasing detained journalists.
