Sudan’s army chief warns politicians against interfering with military

Military, political parties signed framework agreement to resolve Sudan’s political crisis last month

By Bahram Abdel Moneim

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Sudan’s army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Sunday warned politicians against interference in the military.

“We warn politicians against meddling in army's affairs. They have to work to reform their parties,” al-Burhan said in a televised speech.

“We want the armed forces to be free of the Muslim Brotherhood and leftists, and to be supportive of democratic transition,” he added.

The army said a framework agreement signed between the military and political parties last month “is expected to lead the country out of its political crisis."

The deal pledges a 2-year transition period and the appointment of a civilian prime minister by the political parties that signed the framework agreement.

The framework agreement includes five topics, including justice and transitional justice, security and military reform, reviewing the peace deal, the dismantling of the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir and resolving the issue in eastern Sudan.

Last week, the final round of Sudan’s political process kicked off, in an effort to reach an agreement on the country’s transition.

Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021 when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency, a move decried by political forces as a "military coup."
