KHARTOUM, Sudan / ISTANBUL - Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Saturday discussed counterterrorism cooperation and Red Sea security with Egypt’s intelligence chief Hassan Rashad, according to a statement from Sudan’s Sovereignty Council.

The meeting, held in Port Sudan, also addressed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen and develop cooperation between Sudan and Egypt, the statement said.

Rashad conveyed greetings from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Burhan, it added.

The talks covered joint efforts to combat terrorism and safeguard security in the Red Sea and the wider region, according to the council.

They also reviewed humanitarian arrangements in Sudan aimed at facilitating relief operations and ensuring the safe delivery of aid to those in need.

Sudan has been engulfed in fighting since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces over disputes related to unifying the military. The conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with tens of thousands killed and about 13 million people displaced.
