Sudan’s military leader backs civilian rule over armed forces

Country's transitional period scheduled to end with elections in early 2024

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Sudan’s military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said Sunday that he is seeking to build a professional army under an elected civilian authority.

“We want to build professional armed forces that will not participate in politics in the future and will not stand in the way of the state's reform process,” al-Burhan said in a speech at the Security and Military Reform Conference in the capital Khartoum.

“We want to provide a civilian authority to which the armed forces will be subject,” he added.

“This is a good opportunity to reform all state agencies,” al-Burhan said. “We are working to build armed forces which have the trust of all Sudanese.”

The deputy head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, said during the same conference that “the process of security and military reform needs to be developed and kept pace with legislation and laws,” noting that “this is the task of civil institutions such as the Ministry of Justice and the Legislative Council.”

“The success in reforming the security and military system can only be possible with national consensus,” he added.

The Security and Military Reform Conference runs until March 29.

The country's transitional period is scheduled to end with elections in early 2024.
