Sudan's RSF seizes control of police base in capital

RSF says it seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition in Khartoum

By Adel Abdel-Rahim

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - The Sudanese army on Monday confirmed that its rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has seized control of a police base in the south of the capital Khartoum following fierce clashes over three days.

The RSF on Sunday said it managed to take full control of the large police base belonging to the Central Reserve Police and seized large quantities of weapons and ammunition.

"What happened of targeting police bases is not a military victory for a militia [in reference to RSF] that doesn't hesitate to commit all kinds of violations," the Sudanese army said.

It added that police headquarters and bases all over the world are service facilities and have nothing to do with military operations.

Sounds of artillery shelling and fighting with heavy and light weapons continue to be heard in Khartoum and other areas across the country as the two warring parties accuse each other of initiating attacks.

Several cease-fire agreements brokered by Saudis and US mediators between the warring rivals had failed to end violence in the country.

Sudan has been ravaged by clashes between the army and the RSF since April, in a conflict that killed nearly 1,000 civilians and injured thousands, according to local medics.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 2.2 million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Sudan.
