Sweden says it will sign UN migration pact

Swedish government says it aims to prevent irregular migration and provide safe migration

By Atilla Altuntas

STOCKHOLM (AA) – The Swedish government announced Friday that it will ink the UN’s landmark agreement on migration.

In a statement on its official website, the government said that Sweden will sign the first-ever global agreement of the UN on migration issue.

The statement said that the aim was to prevent irregular migration and promote safe migration.

“Children, the elderly and women, who are exposed to migration, will be strongly taken under protection with global cooperation,” it said.

UN’s landmark agreement on migration was concluded in July, after two-year discussions among member states.

The legally non-binding agreement, which aims at making the migration more orderly and safer around the world, will be formally adopted at an international conference in Morocco on Dec. 10-11.

Europe’s populist governments in Austria, Poland and Hungary, and several other countries including the U.S., Israel and Australia have recently announced that they would not sign the pact, claiming that it could undermine their sovereignty and immigration policies.
