Swiss pilot strikes cause numerous flights to be canceled

Following Eurowings pilots' decision to strike, there were between 230 to 400 fewer flights per day at Zurich Airport

GENEVA (AA) - Numerous flights were canceled on Monday as pilots are striking for better working conditions at Swiss airline Eurowings.

In order to get an additional 14 days added to their annual leave, pilots at Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings have declared a three-day strike starting Monday.

According to a statement released by Eurowings, the strike caused the number of daily flights at Zurich Airport to drop to between 230 and 400.

The disruptions had a negative impact on airline routes from Zurich to Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Cologne in Germany.

Kai Duve, finance director at Eurowings, said in a statement that pilots will receive an additional 10 days of vacation time and asked for a return to the negotiating table.

Recalling that the strike caused Eurowings to lose tens of millions of euros in a day, Duve said: "We need to talk now. A new offer will not be made until the conversations start again."
