Coartem Baby approved for use, first malaria treatment specifically for infants and young children

ISTANBUL (AA) - Switzerland’s medicines regulator announced Tuesday the approval of the first malaria treatment specifically developed for babies and young children.
"This marks a significant step in the global effort to improve access to life-saving treatments for vulnerable populations," Swissmedic said on its website.
The drug, known as Coartem Baby, or Riamet Baby in some countries, is expected to be rolled out across several African nations in the coming weeks.
Until now, babies and toddlers have been treated with formulations intended for older children, which carries the risk of incorrect dosing.
Eight African countries involved in the treatment’s regulatory assessment are expected to fast-track national approvals.
Malaria remains a major global health threat. In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths across 83 countries. The WHO African Region accounted for 94% of cases and 95% of deaths, with children under 5 making up about 76% of malaria deaths in the region.
