Taiwan says it doesn't want tensions to rise as China conducts military drills

Taiwanese Defense Ministry says 57 Chinese aircraft and 4 navy vessels are detected again this morning around island nation's territory

ISTANBUL (AA) – Taiwan said on Monday that it "does not want escalation" of tensions with Beijing, a day after the Chinese military conducted large-scale combat readiness drills around the self-ruled island nation.

“We seek neither escalation nor conflict,” Taiwan’s Defense Ministry tweeted.

The statement from Taipei came after the Eastern Theater Command (ETC) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) held the joint “combat-readiness security patrol and real-combat exercise involving troops of multiple services and arms in the waters and airspace around the Taiwan Island” on Sunday.

“The exercise focused on land strikes, sea assaults and other subjects, aiming to test the troops' joint combat capability and resolutely counter the collusive and provocative acts of the external forces and the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces,” said Army Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the ETC.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said PLA aircraft and PLA Navy vessels around Taiwan were “commonly detected, and some aircraft had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.”

“ROC Armed Forces will keep monitoring the situation and safeguarding our homeland and people,” the ministry added.

The Republic of China (ROC) is the official name of Taiwan, which China considers its "breakaway province," despite Taipei's insistence on independence since 1949.

According to the ministry, 57 PLA aircraft and four PLA Navy vessels were detected around Taiwan on Monday morning.

“28 of the detected aircraft had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s southwest air defense identification zone (ADIZ),” it added.

Beijing does not recognize either the median line or the ADIZ.
