Taiwan slams Cambodia for sending its arrested nationals to China
Taipei accuses Phnom Penh of undermining sovereignty after deportations in March
By Anadolu staff
ANKARA - Taiwan has strongly protested Cambodia’s decision to deport its nationals to China, according to the Focus Taiwan news agency, citing the Foreign Ministry.
Focus Taiwan said the ministry indicated that 180 Taiwanese fraud suspects were recently arrested in Cambodia. Some were deported to China late Sunday and early Monday in three groups along with Chinese suspects.
Taipei said it had not received information on how many Taiwanese nationals were sent to China because Cambodian authorities refused to provide a full list.
Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed authorities arrested several "Chinese criminals" in March, including individuals from Taiwan, and deported some to China.
It did not, however, disclose how many of those deported were Chinese or Taiwanese.
The development comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping begins a regional tour to Vietnam, Malaysia and Cambodia this week
Taiwan accused Cambodia of yielding to pressure from Beijing and urged authorities to share the full list of its nationals sent to China.
