DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AA) – The Tanzanian minister of information, communications and information technology led hundreds of tourists Tuesday to launch high-speed broadband internet atop Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa.

Nape Nnauye said after launching the service that tourists climbing the mountain will now be able to communicate with the rest of the world.

“I am proud to launch this important service, it is a step forward for our tourism sector,” Nnape told the Anadolu Agency.

He said the internet facility, provided by state-owned TTCL, would bridge the digital divide in the area and tourists will be able to keep in touch with the rest of the world.

Tourism is a cornerstone of Tanzania’s economy, contributing 18% to the nation’s GDP. The east African country generated $ 1.4 billion in revenues in 2021.

Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level, attracts thousands of tourists every year who enjoy its flora, fauna and rich cultural heritage and hospitality of the native Chagga people.

John Petterson, a tourist from the US who is currently in Marangu, told Anadolu Agency that the launch of the service will attract more tourists.

“I am very happy to be honest. I have climbed the mountain many times but this time it will make a lot of difference since I will be able to share photos and live videos with my family back in the United States,” he said.

Petterson urged the government to improve infrastructure for tourists and provide more rescue facilities in case of emergencies.
