KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Philippines ex-President Rodrigo Duterte, who was arrested on Tuesday for alleged crimes against humanity over is "war on drugs," is being "forcibly" taken to The Hague tonight, the country's Vice President and his daughter Sara Duterte said.
The 79-year-old was taken into custody after his arrival at Manila airport from Hong Kong, on request of the International Criminal Court.
In a statement, Sara said Manila has "surrendered" the former president to "foreign powers."
"This is a blatant affront to our sovereignty and an insult to every Filipino who believes in our nation’s independence," she said.
"Worse, former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is being denied his fundamental rights. Since he was taken this morning, he has not been brought before any competent judicial authority to assert his rights and to allow him to avail of reliefs provided by law," she added.
"This is not justice—this is oppression and persecution."
