Thousands of Israelis continue anti-government rallies

Over past weeks, Israelis took to streets to protest Netanyahu’s plans for judicial overhaul

By Abdelraouf Arna'out

JERUSALEM (AA) - Thousands of Israelis on Wednesday rallied against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu over plans to pass controversial judicial reforms.

The protesters called the rallies as "national day of disruption" where rallies took place in Tel Aviv and in West Jerusalem in front of Netanyahu's office.

According to an Anadolu reporter on the scene, protesters blocked the main roads in Tel Aviv, hindering the traffic movement.

The Israeli police said in a statement that they arrested six Israeli protesters in Tel Aviv for rioting and ignoring the police instructions.

In the past eight weeks, thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to protest Netanyahu’s plans for judicial overhaul.

Proposed by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, the reform, if enacted, would be the most radical change ever in the system of government in Israel.

The planned change would severely limit the power of the Supreme Court of Justice, give the government the power to choose judges, and end the appointment of legal advisers to ministries by the attorney general.

However, Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption, insists that his judicial plan would enhance democracy.
