Top South Korean court to deliver verdict in premier impeachment case

Verdict highly likely to indicate fate of President Yoon Suk Yeol

ISTANBUL (AA) - South Korea’s top court will rule on impeached Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s impeachment case next week, according to a media report.

The Constitutional Court will rule Monday on the case, said Seoul-based Yonhap News.

If the verdict is upheld, he will be removed from office, but if the decision is reversed, he will be immediately reinstated.

Whatever the verdict, it will be a trailblazer for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment ruling by the top court since the National Assembly is arguing about the legality of a Dec. 3 martial law in the Han case.

If the Constitutional Court rules that the martial law decree is unconstitutional and illegal, it is likely the same ruling will also be upheld in Yoon's case.

But the main opposition Democratic Party opposed the decision to hand down the premier's verdict before Yoon's, calling it a "deep regret."

Han was appointed acting president after Yoon was impeached Dec. 14 for his short-lived martial law. The National Assembly impeached him Dec. 27, citing his assistance in Yoon's declaration of martial law on Dec. 3 and his refusal to appoint Constitutional Court justices.
