Trade, defense deals inked as Malaysian PM visits China

Defense deal, among 14 signed during Najib Razak’s visit to Beijing, relates to joint development of naval ships

BEIJING (AA) – Agreements on defense and trade were among the 14 deals signed Tuesday during Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak’s official visit to China.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang held a welcoming ceremony for Razak at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

After bilateral talks, five economic deals and nine intergovernmental agreements were signed in areas including infrastructure, security, defense and commercial development.

The defense agreement related to the joint development of naval ships by the two countries.

A statement issued after the signing ceremony said relations between the sides have been upgraded to the “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation” level with the visit.

Razak is paying a six-day visit to China, during which he is due to meet with President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
