Troika informs Sudan's military ruler of steps to end country's crisis

US, UK and Norway call for country's democratic transition to be put back on track

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - The Troika countries informed the head of Sudan’s military junta Tuesday of five steps needed to end the country’s crisis and resume its democratic transition.

A statement by the British Embassy in Sudan said the US, UK and Norway held a meeting with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, where they discussed how "to see Sudan’s democratic transition put back on track."

"We underscored the need for restoration of the Constitutional Document and of Prime Minister [Abdalla] Hamdok to office as the basis for discussions on how to achieve a civilian-military partnership," it said.

The Troika also "urged the immediate release of all of those detained since October 25th, lifting the state of emergency, and ending violence against peaceful protesters."

Al-Burhan's media office said that both sides agreed to accelerate the forming of the Sovereign Council and the Ministers' Council but did not mention a return of Hamdok to his post.

Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency on Oct. 25 and dissolved the transitional Sovereign Council and government, triggering mass protests.

Before the military takeover, Sudan was administered by a sovereign council of military and civilian officials which was overseeing the transition period until elections in 2023 as part of a precarious power-sharing pact between the military and the Forces for Freedom and Change coalition.
