HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - The US mission to the UN said Thursday that the Trump administration is committed to advancing global peace efforts as Washington prepares to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council in March.
"On the same day the U.S. assumes the UN Security Council Presidency, @FLOTUS will make history, taking up the gavel (the first time any U.S. First lady has presided over the council) and will promote education’s role in securing peace," the mission wrote on US social media platform X.
"The Trump Administration continues to do more for world peace than any other in American history. Follow here for updates and coverage for Monday’s big moment," it added.
The post confirms that US first lady Melania Trump is set to chair a Security Council session next month, marking a first in the history of the organization.
When asked about the first lady's attendance at the Council, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a news conference that the meeting "will be the first time a first lady, or first gentleman, for that matter, has ever presided over a Security Council meeting."
He added that "there have been instances of first ladies having participated in a meeting on behalf of non-members of the Council."
