WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a "group" of American companies will purchase social media platform TikTok after he reached a deal with China that will prevent its closure in the US.
Trump did not specify which firms would purchase the social media platform's US operations from China-based ByteDance, but the announcement follows Trump's repeated efforts to delay the halt of its US operations while negotiations continued.
"We have a deal on Tiktok. I've reached a deal with China. I'm going to speak to President Xi on Friday to confirm everything up," Trump told reporters at the White House before departing for the UK. "We made a very good trade deal, and I hope good for both countries, but a very different deal than they've made in the past."
"I hate to see value like that thrown out the window," he added.
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that negotiators reached a framework deal for the ownership of TikTok, with Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping scheduled to speak Friday to approve the agreement.
TikTok faces a Sept. 17 deadline for ByteDance to divest its US operations or face a nationwide ban due to national security concerns over potential data sharing with Beijing.
Bessent also announced plans for additional trade negotiations "in about a month, again at a different location."
