Trump urges Republicans to back McCarthy for US House Speaker

‘DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT,’ former president writes on his social media site

WASHINGTON (AA) - Former US President Donald Trump urged Republicans early Wednesday to support Kevin McCarthy, who repeatedly failed to secure enough votes to become Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

“CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY,” he wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.

“REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT,” he added.

The US House voted three times Tuesday to choose a speaker after McCarthy failed to secure enough votes.

A fourth round of voting is now in the offing, marking the first such time in 100 years that a nominee initially failed to win enough support to become the chamber's leader.
