Trump vows victory in legal fight over Muslim ban

President has 'no doubt' he will win battle over contentious immigration action

NEW YORK (AA) - President Donald Trump on Friday pledged to be triumphant in an ongoing legal battle regarding his controversial Muslim ban.

"We are going to do whatever is necessary to keep our country safe," Trump said during a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the White House.

"We will be doing something very rapidly having to do with additional security. You will be seeing that some time next week," he said, adding that

Trump added that his administration would continue to go through the court process, and "ultimately I have no doubt that we will win that particular case”.

Trump's executive order that denies entry to the U.S. for nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries took a major hit Thursday, when a federal appeals panel rejected the Justice Department's request to have it unblocked, citing lack of evidence connecting the barred nationals to any tangible terror threats or attacks.

The order, one of the first Trumo signed after assuming office last month, was suspended last Friday when Judge James Robart of Seattle, Washington issued a restraining order that froze its enforcement nationwide.

An angry Trump slammed Robart as a "so-called judge" and said it would be his fault if the U.S. suffered any terror attacks while the executive action remained blocked.

The president also removed from office acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she refused to defend the action in court.

At the news conference Friday, Trump also promised continued cooperation with Japan, one of the U.S.’s long-time allies in the South-Pacific region.

"We face numerous challenges and bilateral cooperation is essential. Our country is committed to being an active and fully engaged partner," Trump said.

"We are committed to the security of Japan and all areas under its administrative control," he added, as he pledged enhanced economic ties and a "trading relationship that is free, fair and reciprocal" between the two major world economies.

The U.S. president also touched on North Korea, vowing to defend against "North Korean missile and nuclear threats, both of which I consider a very very high priority,” he said.
