Tunisia to question Ennahda leader Ghannouchi Tuesday

TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) - Tunisian police have summoned Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi for questioning, his movement said on Monday.

Ennahda spokesman Imad Al-Hamiri said Ghannouchi will appear before investigators on Tuesday.

No information was yet available about the purpose of the investigation.

"There is no reason for summoning Ghannouchi again, except that this is part of the coup policy of dealing with the political life [in Tunisia]," Al-Hamiri said.

There was no comment yet from the Tunisian authorities on the report.

Ghannouchi, a former parliament speaker, was already questioned on charges of illicit funding for Ennahda and helping send Tunisians to conflict zones.

Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis that aggravated the country's economy since 2021 when President Kais Saied ousted the government and dissolved parliament.

Since then, Saied held a referendum to draft a new Constitution last July and parliamentary elections in December.

While he insists that his measures were meant to "save" the country, critics have accused the Tunisian leader of orchestrating a coup.
