Turkey: CHP urges vacationers to attend Istanbul revote

‘A duty awaits all of us on June 23,’ says main opposition party leader

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's main opposition leader Tuesday called on Istanbulities out of the city for a holiday to return to the metropolis for the June 23 mayoral revote.

"A duty awaits all of us on June 23. Those who are on vacation should return [to Istanbul] and cast their votes," Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of Republican People’s People (CHP), told his party's parliamentary group meeting in the capital Ankara.

"You will go to ballot boxes on June 23, and you will vote for Ekrem Imamoglu," he said.

Ekrem Imamoglu, candidate of the CHP, and Binali Yildirim, for the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, will vie for the Istanbul metropolitan municipality mayorship again after the Supreme Election Council (YSK) ruled for the re-run of the Istanbul polls due to irregularities and violations of election law.

The original ballot, held on March 31, was declared invalid also due to polling clerks presiding over 754 polling centers not being civil servants, as is required by Turkish law.

The results of the March vote were canceled after the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party and its coalition partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) appealed to the YSK, citing irregularities and contradictions with legal measures.
