Turkey: Main opposition candidate elected Burdur mayor
Ali Orkun Ercengiz receives 24,896 votes, according to unofficial results
ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s main opposition mayoral candidate has been elected mayor of southwestern Burdur province in local elections, according to unofficial results on Sunday.
The Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate, Ali Orkun Ercengiz, bagged 24,896 votes, while ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party candidate Deniz Kurt got 20,877 votes, the unofficial results revealed.
Earlier on Sunday, millions of Turkish voters cast their votes in the local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.
